What moved this quarter
Annual inflation reached 4.1% in the June 2026 quarter, and transport did most of the lifting. Petrol was up 27.4% over the year, and other vehicle fuels — largely diesel — rose a striking 71.1%. Because fuel carries real weight in the national basket, those two lines alone contributed well over a percentage point of the 4.1%. It is the clearest example of why one national number can mislead: a household with no car sidesteps most of that increase, while a two-car commuting household feels it head-on.
The next largest pressures were harder to avoid. Electricity climbed 12.8% and household gas 11.9%, so almost every household with a power bill absorbed some of this quarter's rise. Property rates rose 8.2% and owner-occupied housing costs 2.7% — both of which fall on homeowners rather than renters. A household that owns its home and rarely drives, insulated from fuel but exposed to rates and power, can land close to the national figure by a completely different route than the average basket suggests.
Food was mixed. Meat and poultry rose 7.6% and seafood 5.0%, while broader groceries were more subdued at 1.6%, so meat-heavy and lighter-eating households pulled apart. Not everything went up: contents insurance fell 4.1%, with dwelling and life insurance also edging down, easing pressure on households where premiums are a large line. Rent rose just 0.5% over the year, meaning renters' single biggest cost was unusually flat this quarter even as ownership costs climbed.
Put together, the households that felt the most this quarter were heavier drivers and larger energy users; those that felt the least were car-free renters with modest power bills. Most people sit somewhere between. The calculator above reweights this same official data to your own mix of housing, transport, food and energy, so you can see which of these movements actually reached your household — and which passed it by.
Why your household result may differ
The national figure combines the changing prices of a broad household basket. Your result can be higher or lower depending on housing, transport, food, energy and other spending priorities.
Generated from the Stats NZ quarterly CPI Excel workbook, primarily table 7.02. Official series are retained as detailed household components and grouped into simpler result areas. Remaining CPI expenditure is included in Other spending. Displayed component movements quote the published Stats NZ annual changes; the calculation engine uses contribution-consistent figures so the weighted basket reproduces the official headline CPI exactly.
